The federal Liberals are accusing the Conservative government of hiding the details of $100 million in spending on G8/G20 policing to protect Julian Fantino, who is running for the Tories in an upcoming byelection.

Fantino, who was OPP commissioner during the G8/G20 summits, is running in the Nov. 29 byelection to replace outgoing Liberal MP Maurizio Bevilacqua in Vaughan, Ont.

Fantino was responsible for overseeing the OPP's $95 million in spending for the G8 in Huntsville, and another $6 million for the G20 in Toronto. The Tories have yet to disclose how that money was spent.

In the House of Commons Wednesday, Liberals demanded that the government disclose the specifics prior to the byelection.

"When we have a detailed account of federal spending by the Toronto Police Service on the G8/G20, it's fair to ask if the Conservatives are running interference so that Julian Fantino doesn't have to answer tough questions about spending under his watch," said Liberal MP Frank Valeriote.

The Liberals claim the Tories are either trying to protect themselves or Fantino.

"We've already seen this government's lavish spending on frosted glasses and posh centrepieces. Are there more embarrassing items they wish to hide?" asked Liberal MP Geoff Regan.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews defended his government's actions.

"The arrangement with the OPP is that they have until Dec. 1st of this year to submit all of their G8/G20 expenses. This is significantly shorter than the deadline for other security events. Indeed ... years shorter."

Toews claims the Dec. 1 deadline has been in place since before the summits took place, and said he expects OPP costs to be under budget.
