A stalwart Hazel McCallion weathered a judicial probe to earn a 12th term as the mayor of Mississauga, Ont., in Monday's municipal election.
Hazel McCallion testified before a judicial inquiry last month in the middle of her re-election campaign. (CBC) With 224 of 231 polls reporting, McCallion had 76 per cent of the vote. Former city councillor Dave Cook, her chief rival, had just eight per cent.
McCallion, 89, is Canada's oldest mayor and has presided over Ontario's third-largest city, just west of Toronto, since 1978.
Her re-election bid was marred by a judicial inquiry into her involvement in a failed $14.4-million land deal between the municipality and a development company partly owned by her son, Peter McCallion.
The inquiry is trying to determine whether she violated conflict-of-interest guidelines, although McCallion asserts she did not give her son any preferential treatment.
The whiff of impropriety surrounding the development deal saw McCallion lose the support of the city's major newspaper, the Mississauga News, even as she testified at the inquiry in the middle of her re-election campaign.
"I think it's great," McCallion said of her victory, "in light of the six to eight months that the press has been running a daily, almost daily, campaign against me. I think that's pretty good. Because the public doesn't know all the details."
Despite her overwhelming win, McCallion's judicial woes cost her. She habitually garners 90 per cent support in her re-election bids.
The veteran municipal politician has already announced that this was her last campaign and she will not run again.
