Hazel McCallion, who has been the mayor of Mississauga, Ont., for more than 30 years and is hoping for her 12th term in office, has lost the support of a local newspaper.

The Mississauga News has supported the 89-year-old mayor for most of her career, but is now looking for change.

"The mayor has helped make this city the envy of many," the paper said, but "after an illustrious career, it is time for McCallion to vacate her office."

The inquiry that's probing McCallion's potential conflict of interest in a land deal involving her son's company has clouded the picture, said Judy Imerson, the paper's editorial director.

However, citizens like Deborah Sammie, a 20-year resident of the city, said she still has "full confidence" in the mayor. Another voter said he's hoping there will be additional checks and balances at Mississauga city council.

Monday is election day.
