Residents around the Ontario town of Orangeville are being asked to check their properties for anything that might relate to the case of Sonia Varaschin, missing since last Sunday.

The 42-year-old woman's bloodstained car was found behind the town hall on Monday, and investigators said they believe Varaschin met with foul play.

"We really need the public to be our eyes and ears and help us locate Sonia," said Ontario Provincial Police Det.-Insp. Mark Pritchard.

He said Friday that police are looking for a cream-coloured or beige bedsheet and comforter missing from the bedroom of the townhouse where Varaschin lived alone. The bedding may be covered in blood.

The missing bedding suggests there was "a disposal of biological evidence, perhaps," he said. "Or that the bedding was a convenient way of concealing her body for removal from the house."

Pritchard said it was likely only one person was involved in what happened to Varaschin, and police believe the culprit was known to her.

Without a trace

Searches of the Orangeville area, northwest of Toronto, have so far turned up no trace of the missing woman.

Orangeville Police Chief Joseph Tomei read a statement released by her members of her family.

"She is a young, active, hardworking and caring individual, who deserves the opportunity to continue making a difference in this world and in her community," the statement said. "We miss her dearly and are pleading for her safe return."
