Christ Apostolic Church International - Canada, a Toronto-based charity, has been stripped of its charitable status and faces serious allegations from the Canada Revenue Agency.

An audit of the organization by the CRA found significant discrepancies between the tax receipts issued and money actually collected and put into a bank account.

The CRA says a large number of duplicate copies of receipts were missing or not maintained. Among the receipts the church did provide there were serious discrepancies, including taxpayer names and donation amounts that did not match the receipts that were filed by taxpayers.

The CRA also says the charity falsified invoices and shipping documents.

In the 2007 fiscal year, the church issued tax receipts for $256,615 for donations to the organization. However, it only deposited $81,298 into its bank account.

The organization explained that it had issued receipts for both cash and property donated. The CRA says the invoices provided to substantiate the donation of property were falsified.

CRA also accuses the organization of not maintaining or providing adequate records to support its activities.

A charity that has its status revoked can no longer issue tax receipts to donors.
