The Toronto Raptors officially announced on Wednesday the rumoured trade that sends disgruntled forward Hedo Turkoglu to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for guard Leandro Barbosa and forward Dwayne Jones.

Toronto acquires a player in Barbosa that Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo acquired during the 2003 NBA draft during his long tenure with the Suns.

Barbosa, 27, is coming off an injury-plagued season in which he averaged 9.5 points a game, down from 14.2 in 2008-09. The Brazilian guard, who usually came off the bench for the Suns, posted a career high average of 18.1 points a game in 2006-07.

"Leandro Barbosa is a player I'm quite familiar with and I'm very pleased that he is coming to Toronto," Colangelo said in a statement. "His speed, quickness and scoring ability will mesh well with our desired playing style and talented young athletes."

The six-foot-10 Jones, provides size and depth. He has played in 82 career NBA games, averaging 1.3 points and 2.3 rebounds and 7.8 minutes per game.

Turkolgu leaves Toronto after completing just one season of the five-year, $53-million US contract he signed last summer.

Colangelo has been busy remaking a roster that lost its biggest star, Chris Bosh, to Miami.

"With the departure of Chris Bosh now real, this trade fits well with our plan of adding talent to the roster while establishing future salary cap flexibility," said Colangelo.

Last week, Colangelo re-signed power forward Amir Johnson to a reported five-year, $34-million deal, and inked a four-year, $18.8-million offer sheet with small forward Linas Kleiza of the Denver Nuggets.

He also made a bid to bring Tyson Chandler and Boris Diaw in from Charlotte, but negotiations fell through with the Bobcats.
