The Toronto Transit Commission has unveiled a new text message system that will tell commuters how long they have to wait for the next streetcar to arrive.

Customers can phone a number and receive an SMS text message with a schedule of when the next six streetcars are due to arrive at that particular stop.

The system is coming into service now because streetcars are outfitted with GPS tracking technology.

The phone number and a specific location number are being posted on 600 streetcar poles across the city. TTC chair Adam Giambrone said Thursday the new system guarantees arrival times — give or take a few minutes.

The TTC isn't charging anything for the messages, but cellphone companies will. Standard text message rates apply.

The same message system will be provided at bus stops later this year.
