Toronto productions of Rock of Ages and Mamma Mia! will be cancelled for a week because of the G20 summit.

Mirvish Productions announced the cancellations for the period from June 21 to June 27, saying Friday it made the decision after meetings with the G20 security team and Toronto police.

The Royal Alexandra and the Princess of Wales theatres, where the shows are playing, are within the outer security perimeter for the June 26-27 summit.

Mirvish said the King Street theatres are in a designated "traffic zone," and the company received "inconclusive or contradictory" information about whether this would affect theatregoers' ability to get to the shows.

Mirvish is not the only Toronto theatre cancelling shows because of the G20 meeting. Factory Theatre is closing its season on June 20, a week earlier than scheduled because of anticipated issues over public movement in the downtown core.

Its final show, the comedy Featuring Loretta, will run just 7½ weeks and tickets are to be discounted during the final week in a "Beat the G20" incentive.

Mirvish's Mamma Mia! is a touring production scheduled to be in Toronto for eight weeks and will be closing Sunday, June 20, a week earlier than previously scheduled. Rock of Ages resumes its run June 29.

Theatre impresario David Mirvish said his company had intended to keep the shows running, but the uncertainty over access forced the decision to cancel.

"The theatrical adage we have always lived by is 'the show must go on.'" Mirvish said. "But in this instance — an unprecedented instance for us as we've always performed our shows — we have concluded that our audiences are best served by the shows not going on."

People holding tickets to June 21-27 performances will be contacted and offered an exchange, Mirvish said.
