A man and a woman charged in the suffocation death of a Toronto teacher last summer were extradicted from Mexico on Thursday and scheduled to make an appearance in court on Friday.

Juan Antonio Reyes, 24, and Ana Laura Rodrigues, 20, both of Mexico, have been charged with first degree murder in connection with the death of 44-year old Consuelo Valencia-Russo.

Russo's body was found in the trunk of her car on July 9, 2009, outside the Toronto apartment building in the Jane Street and Sheppard Avenue area where she once lived.

Images of the two suspects were allegedly captured on the apartment building's security cameras.

An arrest warrant was first issued for the suspects in July, and Mexican authorities detained them in December, allowing Toronto police to extradite them on Thursday.

Toronto city councillor Cesar Palacio, who fathered a son with Russo, issued a statement on Friday, saying there was relief in knowing those alleged to be responsible were in custody. He said there was also "sadness in that these arrests open the very fresh wounds."
