A Toronto paramedic has been honoured by Time magazine for his commitment to disaster relief.

Rahul Singh, the founder and executive director of GlobalMedic, has been listed as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time.

The list, produced annually, "recognizes activism, innovation and achievement." Singh is mentioned as a global leader in the area of disaster relief.

The quick response by Singh and GlobalMedic to this year's earthquake relief in Haiti was the catalyst for the recognition.

"Singh and his group of volunteers wasted no time in arriving in Port-au-Prince and setting about providing clean drinking water and medical aid wherever it was needed," wrote Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Maxc Bellerive.

"Over an eight-week period, his team distributed 2.4 million gallons of clean water, while GlobalMedic's two inflatable field hospitals brought medical assistance to more than 7,000 people."

Bellerive praised Singh as "a shining example" of the selflessness of the disaster workers who helped his country in the aftermath of the January earthquake.

In the past 12 years GlobalMedic has helped at 50 disasters in all corners of the world: among them Haiti, China, Chile, Pakistan, Honduras, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

"It's a huge honour," Singh told CBC News in a telephone interview on Thursday.

"It means that our agency has an opportunity of interacting with more world leaders and more decision makers that hold the purse strings on funding, so we can get out there."

Singh is a full-time paramedic with the City of Toronto.
