Two of the biggest clubs in the history of Italian soccer are coming to Toronto.

Serie A outfits Juventus and Fiorentina will square off in an exhibition match on May 25 at Toronto's Rogers Centre, a message on Fiorentina's official website confirmed Tuesday.

Based in the Tuscan city of Florence, Fiorentina is going on a North American tour once the current Serie A campaign ends in mid-May.

Fiorentina will play two games in Montreal, meeting the Montreal Impact on May 23 at Stade Saputo and taking on fellow Italian club AC Milan on June 2 at Olympic Stadium.

Juventus will also be in North America to play against Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls on May 23.

The Toronto game comes in the leadup to the World Cup, which means both Fiorentina and Turin-based Juventus will likely be missing several star players who will be in training camps with their respective national teams — the World Cup starts on June 11 in South Africa.

Italian league titles

Still, the arrival in Toronto of two of the biggest clubs in the history of Italian soccer is a pretty big deal.

Juventus has won a record 27 Italian league titles, two Champions League crowns, nine Italian Cups, a trio of UEFA Cups, two World Club Cup championships and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

Some of the greatest stars in recent history — including Zinedine Zidane, Roberto Baggio, Michel Platini and Pave Nedved — have played for Juventus, which was founded in 1897.

In 2006, Juventus was relegated to Serie B, Italy's second division, for its participation in a match-fixing scandal that rocked the very foundations of Italian soccer.

Fiorentina's resume includes an Italian Super Cup, six Italian Cups, as well as two league titles. Former high-profile players include Gabriel Batistuta and Rui Costa.
