A window washer who fell at least 12 storeys from a Toronto condo tower after an "equipment malfunction" was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The man was at the top of the 33-storey building at 381 Front St. W. on Friday when he fell, said Sgt. Jason Shankaran of Toronto police.

He fell between "12 and 15 storeys" but did not hit the ground because he was wearing a safety harness, Shankaran said.

The man was dangling from his safety harness when fire crews arrived around 2:30 p.m. ET.

“He was lowered using that safety harness, using the existing equipment he was attached to," Shankaran said.

Fire crews were then able to lower the man to safety, he said. A second man who was rescued was not injured, Shankaran said.

The man in hospital was not seriously injured but "did lose consciousness at one point during the ordeal and he has suffered non-life-threatening injuries," Shankaran said.

Shankaran did not provide details on what caused the man to fall, beyond calling it an equipment malfunction.
