Man dies after canoe capsizes in Newmarket river

A man has drowned after his canoe capsized in the Holland River, in Newmarket, just north of Toronto early Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the 55-year-old man's canoe was swept under water after it went over a dam along the river and into high water.
Emergency crews responded after someone called police reporting a body was discovered in the Bayview Parkway and Davis Drive area.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"As he approached the dam he got caught in the fast-moving water and went over the dam," Insp. Douglas Conley of York Regional Police said.
"At the bottom of the dam, the water is very turbulent and it would appear he got caught up in the turbulence and wasn't able to get out of the water."
The man was wearing his lifejacket, police said.
