It's March Break and students are out of school, enjoying spring-like weather — which is a key reason Toronto police have launched a road safety campaign.
They're targeting pedestrians, cyclists and motorists to ensure the rules of the road are being followed.
Const. Hugh Smith of Traffic Services said there are other reasons for the week-long campaign, like the start of daylight time.
"There are statistics showing that a little bit of sleep deprivation accounts for an increase of collisions over the first couple of days [after the clocks are changed],” Smith told CBC News.
"It also coincides with this time of the year, with a change of driving attitudes due to the change in seasons," he added.
So far this year, there have been nine pedestrian deaths in the city. Smith said that's three times higher than last year at this time.
Smith said police are also hoping to make motorists aware of where they park and whether they're blocking access to crosswalks.
