Mike Komisarek's first season with the Toronto Maple Leafs has ended much earlier than expected.

Komisarek, sidelined since Jan. 2, learned Wednesday that he requires season-ending shoulder surgery.

No date for the surgery has been scheduled.

"Our team doctors have recommended this after a determined effort to rehab the injury without surgery," he said in a statement. "Having this done immediately is the right thing to do for the Leafs."

Komisarek, 28, also confirmed that he will not play for the United States at the Vancouver Olympics.

"I am truly sorry that I will not be able to represent my country," he said.

Komisarek, a rugged rearguard with a penchant for blocking shots, managed four assists and 40 penalty minutes in 34 games with Toronto, which signed him to a five-year, $22.5-million US contract last July 1.

He resumed skating within a week of suffering the injury, but never received medical clearance to partake in contact drills.

Softening the blow somewhat is the arrival of abrasive Dion Phaneuf from the Calgary Flames over the weekend, in a blockbuster trade involving seven players.

Phaneuf impressed in his debut with the Maple Leafs, doling out six hits, blocking four shots and scrapping with defenceman Colin White in a 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.

And seasoned pros Jeff Finger and Garnet Exelby could help fill the void, if need be.

Komisarek has posted 12 goals and 62 points with 536 penalty minutes in 395 NHL games since he was drafted seventh overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2001.

He plans to meet informally with the media on Thursday morning (11 a.m. ET).
