The Ontario government is promising to provide $1 million in immediate emergency aid to help the people of Haiti.

The money will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross to support the global relief effort.

Ontario has already offered to provide any personnel and equipment needed for Canada's role in the relief effort, including expertise in health care, search and rescue teams, forensic services and clean drinking water.

Premier Dalton McGuinty is offering his thanks to "all Ontarians who have moved so quickly to offer their assistance to the people of Haiti."

Meanwhile, in Haiti, dozens of people have crammed into the Canadian compound in Port-au-Prince.

Outside the embassy gates, Haitians huddle before heaps of rubble that used to be their homes.

At least four Canadians have died as a result of the 7.0 magnitude quake and at least four others are still missing.
