A Toronto police officer has been charged with the sexual assault of another man.

A 21-year-old man claimed a police officer stopped him for committing unspecified driving infractions on Sept. 2, said the province's Special Investigations Unit. The Unit investigates allegations of sexual assault against police, as well as civilian injuries or deaths involving police.

"There was an interaction, and as a result, the man sustained injuries," the SIU said in a Tuesday release. The 21-year-old man formally complained to the SIU on Sept. 8.

The SIU has charged Const. Salameh Marji with sexual assault and assault. Marji will make a Toronto court appearance on Jan. 18.

The SIU said it would not be commenting further on the case.
