Toronto has once again been handed the dubious distinction of having the worst road in Ontario, based on an annual poll.

For a second year, Steeles Avenue, which borders the north end of the city, tops the list of the 20 worst roads released by the Canadian Automobile Association and the Ontario Road Builders' Association.

Toronto has four more roads in the Top 10 alone, a group that includes Ritson Road in Oshawa in second spot and Burlington Street in Hamilton in third.

Roads in Belleville, Ottawa and Sudbury round out the Top 10, while Kingston, London, St. Thomas and Welland roadways are named in the Top 20.

The Canadian Automobile Association said almost 10,000 people voted for the road, highway or bridge they wanted fixed by casting ballots through the group's magazine, at auto repair shops, at CAA stores, online and at the Canadian National Exhibition.

Spokeswoman Faye Lyons said it's the highest number of votes the association has seen in the seven years of the worst-road campaign.

Steeles Avenue has been on the list all seven years, but this is the first time almost half the worst roads are in Toronto.

Rob Bradford, executive director of the Ontario Road Builders' Association, said substandard roads and bridges increase the damage done to vehicles and costs to families and businesses.

Properly maintained roads and bridges also mean fewer injuries and deaths, he said.
