TTC riders who obstruct doors, rest their feet on seats or fail to give up priority seating will soon have to pay for their misdeeds.

Starting Monday, the people who commit those infractions could be fined $195.

The Toronto Transit Commission is also hiking fines for many other common offences on the bus, subway and streetcar system, like smoking or not paying full fare.

The penalty for evading a fare will increase to $195 from $115. The maximum levy for smoking increases to $195 from $95.

The new rules are intended to improve service and safety, said TTC spokesman Kevin Carrington.

TTC constables will grant more leeway to those who put their feet up on a seat than someone caught smoking, he said. Initially, they will focus more on informing riders about the rule changes instead of slapping them with fines, he said.

"We're not out there headhunting," he said. "We're not out there to gain revenue."

Last year, the TTC collected about $600,000 in fines.
