Two 17-year-old Burlington students have been charged with assault with a weapon in what Halton Regional Police suspect was a case of hazing.

Police said five Grade 9 students were walking home Tuesday when two vehicles carrying senior high school students pulled up and forced the younger group into a wooded area.

The older students allegedly beat the victims with paddles, abused them verbally and scrawled inappropriate comments on their faces.

The incident took place near Burlington’s M.M. Robinson High School. None of the students needed medical attention, police said.

"Despite the relatively minor injuries that these kids received, the embarrassment and the potential emotional harm that this could cause is not something any kid wants to go through on the first day of school," Det. Jeff Hill said.

The two 17-year-olds are expected to appear in court next month.
