Toronto police say they know the downtown location of a series of bank frauds over the past few days — but they don't want to make that information public.
On Wednesday police were fielding complaints from people who said their bank accounts had been compromised.
Included in the dozens of complaints were people at the CBC Broadcast Centre, as well as employees at the nearby Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
"You feel almost violated in the fact that your information is stolen and someone is trying to get into your account and get money out of it," said Ali Gunoven, who had over $1,000 taken from his account.
Gunoven only found out about the theft after being contacted by his bank.
"I got a call from my bank saying my card might have been compromised," he said.
Toronto Police Const. Tony Vella says detectives from the fraud division are working with the major banks to find out who is behind the scam.
Police say the culprits were able to install a device that copies debit cards and pin numbers at a desktop debit machine. After getting the information they withdrew money from accounts.
The banks say they are working with police to find the thieves.
