Longtime politician Frank Klees says he's throwing his hat into the race for the Ontario Progressive Conservative leadership.

Klees, the MPP for Newmarket-Aurora, tells CTV News he's made the decision "after very careful consideration."

His announcement came just ahead of an expected bid by Randy Hillier on Monday morning.

Klees has been representing the area north of Toronto that has included Richmond Hill, Newmarket, Markham and Aurora since 1995.

He is the caucus chair for the Official Opposition and is the critic for the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Public Infrastructure Renewal.

Klees and his family immigrated to Canada from Germany when he was five and settled in Leamington.

Hillier, the member for Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington, will hold a news conference Monday morning at the legislature, where he's expected to announce his intention to run for the leadership.

Others rumoured to be considering the job are Tim Hudak and Christine Elliott.

The post became available following former leader John Tory's departure from politics after he lost a March 5 byelection in the riding of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock.

The leadership convention will be held June 27 in Markham.
