Police in Durham Region are warning dog owners to take special care after three suspected cases of poisoning in a popular southern Ontario park.

Police were called at about 11:30 p.m. Monday to Poplar Park in Port Perry, Ont., north of Oshawa, after three dog owners who took their pets to an emergency animal clinic were told the pets had been poisoned.

All three dogs had been in the park at different times during the day and had eaten cupcakes off the ground near a tree in the park.

Investigators said a veterinarian believes the animals ingested a "poison-like antifreeze," such as windshield wiper fluid, police spokesman Dave Selby said.

"One of the dog owners actually scooped up some of the remnants of the cupcake, so we're getting that analyzed," Selby said.

Officers searched the park and others in the area but found no other poisonous material, he added.

The dogs are expected to recover, and the park has since been reopened, but police are asking dog owners to keep an eye out for anything suspicious.

Last summer, two dogs died and others were sickened in Toronto's High Park. Toronto police later recovered a bag of flax bread from the park that was believed to have been soaked in antifreeze.
