Toronto Mayor David Miller and TTC chair Adam Giambrone both say they are looking at ways of improving safety on the city's public transportation system.

The politicians made the comments in the wake of another shooting on the TTC.

On Monday, a 17-year-old male was shot in the hip on board an Ossington bus as it travelled southbound on Oakwood Avenue, north of St. Clair Avenue West.

Police said an altercation started on the bus between the victim and at least two suspects. The victim was shot once on the bus. All of those involved in the altercation left the vehicle and at least one more shot was fired outside the bus.

There were about a dozen people on the bus at the time.

Miller said the TTC and the police are working on ways to improve security.

"I don't think we can simply rely on TTC special constables, nor would you want to. And [police Chief Bill] Blair has been quite innovative in his approach, so I look forward to strengthening the role and the ability of Toronto Police Service to ensure the TTC is safe," said Miller.

Monday's shooting was the second in a month.

On Jan. 22 a man was shot on the platform of the Osgoode subway station.

Giambrone said the TTC has taken some steps to address safety, but will look at any additional measures to improve security on the city's buses, subways and streetcars.

"The end of February, of course, marks the completion of the installation of the [security] cameras in all surface vehicles. So right now all buses have them and by the end of next week all streetcars will have them. And right now we're … evaluating what next needs to be done to in order to guarantee Torontonians the safest transit system we can," said Giambrone.

The man who was shot is recovering in hospital.

On Tuesday morning police said they were looking for at least two suspects.
