Toronto police have taken one person into custody after two young people were pushed onto subway tracks and injured, officials said.

Two males, described by police as teenagers, were taken to hospital and treated.

Police said the two teens were deliberately pushed onto the tracks at about 4:50 p.m. at the Dufferin subway station in Toronto's west end.

According to a statement by the Toronto Transit Commission, one of the teens was able to crawl under the platform out of the way of the oncoming eastbound train.

Officials said the other teen was clipped by the train and had to be removed from under the train by rescue crews. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries to the lower half of his body, officials said.

Police said the teens did not appear to know their attacker.

Witnesses told local media that a man, who appeared to be in his 40s, appeared agitated on the platform and pushed the youths unprovoked.

Police are interviewing witnesses and reviewing video surveillance. Toronto police asked anyone who saw the incident to contact them.

The man fled the station and was followed by onlookers. He was apprehended by police at a nearby store.

The incident occurred during rush hour on Friday afternoon and resulted in a service disruption along the Bloor-Danforth subway line between Ossington and Keele stations. The route was reopened at about 6 p.m.
