Chrysler LLC says it will temporarily close four assembly plants next week, including one in Brampton, Ont., because of weak U.S. sales.

The company says it will idle factories in Brampton; Sterling Heights, Mich.; Belvidere, Ill.; and Detroit from Feb. 9-13.

Spokesman Max Gates says it's because of economic conditions. Additional closures are possible because the company reviews its production schedules every week.

Chrysler has 9,800 employees in Canada and operates vehicle assembly plants in Brampton and Windsor, Ont., and a casting plant in Toronto.

The Brampton factory, one of the Chrysler factories that experienced a longer-than-usual shutdown over the year-end holiday period, makes the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger.

Sterling Heights Assembly builds the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring while Belvidere makes the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass and Patriot. The Detroit factory on Connor Avenue builds the Dodge Viper.

Chrysler sales were down 55 per cent last month and 30 per cent in 2008.
