A Windsor police officer is recovering after being shot in Detroit during an apparent car-jacking on Monday afternoon.

The 49-year-old officer was shot in the arm and chest and is recovering in hospital.

Windsor police Chief Gary Smith says the 20-year veteran is going to survive and is helping Detroit police with their investigation.

Smith said the off-duty officer was approached in a parking lot of an auto parts store.

He said a person tapped on the officer's window then fired several shots.

Detroit police have one suspect in custody and are looking for two more.

Windsor police have not released the name of the injured officer.
