The union for striking staff at York University say a vote on the latest contract offer will be held next Monday and Tuesday.

The dates follow a university request to have the provincial Labour Ministry direct a supervised vote on its offers.

Under Ontario law, employers can ask for a secret-ballot vote of union members on a contract offer just once in each round of bargaining.

Contract faculty, teaching assistants and graduate assistants walked off the job in early November, wiping out classes for some 50,000 students.

Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 3903 is asking the 3,300 employees in three bargaining units to reject the offers, saying they are "substandard" and take workers in the wrong direction.

The union is demanding contract faculty be awarded five-year contracts instead of the eight-month contracts they have now.
