A taxi driver from Mississauga has been killed in a collision on the Queen Elizabeth Way. Police suspect the victim was hit by an impaired driver.

The crash happened at about 1 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing a BMW speeding in the westbound lanes of the QEW in Mississauga. According to police the car was driving erratically and aggressively.

The BMW hit a Chrysler Sebring, forcing it off the road. The driver and passengers in the Sebring were not injured.

"The BMW then rolled onto its roof and struck a van — it was one of the taxi vans, a taxicab van — the taxicab van then went through the steel guardrail, went airborne, hit a pole and then through the fence and ended up on the north service road. The driver of that vehicle, a 59-year-old male from Mississauga, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene," said OPP Const. Dave Woodford.

The driver of the BMW managed to get out of his car, but suffered some injuries.

The accident investigation forced the closure of the westbound lanes of the QEW throughout the night,. The road reopened in time for the morning rush hour.

The driver of the BMW is under arrest in hospital. Woodford said police are considering charges of impaired driving causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

Police are not releasing the name of the victim until his family is notified.
