Eight people were arrested Wednesday and collectively face 101 fraud charges in an alleged ATM card manufacturing ring.

The Toronto police fraud squad, along with the RCMP and provincial police services, wrapped up a six-week investigation into the skimming of debit card information through several GTA automated tellers.

It is alleged that the group built equipment that could be placed in ATM locations to capture client data and personal identification numbers, which would later be used in duplicating the cards.

The equipment would be placed on the machines for short periods of time and removed after the information was collected.

Police say theft and counterfeit payment cards have been a growing problem in the GTA and across the country.

Financial institutions estimate about $100 million was lost to ATM fraud in 2007, which involved almost 160,000 card holders.
