The Ontario government is going to spend more than $2 billion this year to improve provincial roads and highways.
Transportation Minister Jim Bradley said in a statement the investment will "create thousands of construction jobs that strengthen our economy and keep our roads safe."
The $2 billion figure represents a 20 per cent increase in spending from the previous year.
Some of the key construction projects in and around the GTA will include:
- Widening the QEW from six to eight lanes from Burloak Drive to Trafalgar Road in Oakville to add HOV(high occupancy vehicle) lanes.
- Repairing the northbound express lanes on Highway 427 from the QEW to Highway 401 in Toronto.
- Widening Highway 401 from four to six lanes from Woodstock to Cambridge.
- Repairing the southbound lanes on Highway 400 from Forbes Road to Highway 11 in Simcoe County.
In total, the repair work will cover 472 kilometres of highways. More than 100 bridges will also be built or repaired during the construction period.
