Three members of the Mallory family of Utopia, Ont., have reached the summit of Mount Everest.

In April, five Mallorys — mother, father, two sons and one daughter — set off on a journey from their home, about 15 kilometres west of Barrie, to climb the world's tallest mountain.

On Sunday night, Dan Mallory, 57, and his sons reached the top of the world. Daughter Laura was hoping to join them on Monday.

Barbara Mallory, 56, abandoned the trek after being injured a month ago, but was thrilled when her husband called her from the summit.

"I think it's really important for them," she told CBC News. "This is something that they really wanted to do, and they've achieved that.

"As long as everybody comes back safe, absolutely wonderful. I'm a little nervous about my daughter. But we'll just have to see what happens in that regard."

Mallory said her husband Dan and sons Adam, 25, and Alan, 22, reached the peak on Sunday. Her daughter Laura needed an extra day of rest, because she was ill, but was expected to make a summit attempt on Monday.

If successful, Laura Mallory, 20, would become the youngest Canadian ever to reach the top of Mount Everest.
