Wayne Gretzky told the Toronto Star he is not leaving the Phoenix Coyotes. (David Zalubowski/Associated Press)Wayne Gretzky has quieted rumours that he is leaving the Phoenix Coyotes to become the president of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
"I am the coach of the Coyotes and part owner … as much as I love Canada and the Toronto Maple Leafs, I have no interest in selling my stakes and leaving the Coyotes," Gretzky said in an e-mail to the Toronto Star on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment president Richard Peddie and lawyer Gord Kirke, the pair responsible for finding the Maple Leafs' next general manager, met with former Vancouver Canucks GM Dave Nonis on Tuesday.
The interview with Nonis is thought to be the start of the process to find the Maple Leafs' next GM.
Peddie, Kirke and interim GM Cliff Fletcher have compiled a list of 40 candidates.
Fletcher has said the search is not expected to heat up for the next six to eight weeks.
