Ontario government injects $100 million in crime victims compensation fund

The provincial board that compensates victims of violent crime in Ontario is receiving $100 million from the government.
The money will be spread out over two to three years to help the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board speed up the compensation process.
The Ministry of the Attorney General says the funding will ensure 8,000 victims of violent crime and their families receive compensation.
In February 2007, Ontario ombudsman Andre Marin called for immediate action to speed up the compensation system for crime victims.
The provincial government later gave the board $14.7 million to hire more adjudicators and staff and to speed up the hearing process.
The government also appointed former chief justice of Ontario, Roy McMurtry, to review the compensation process. His report is expected later this year.
