Scofflaws parking illegally in Toronto will have to pay hundreds of dollars more in fines if they're caught, starting March 14.

The fines have gone way up for anyone caught parking in a spot reserved for those with a disability, in front of a fire hydrant or blocking a fire route.

It will now cost $450 for parking in a handicapped space, without a proper permit — an increase of $300.

Parking authorities are also cracking down on anyone blocking fire routes or fire hydrants.  Those fines will now rise from $30 to anywhere from $100 to $250.

Greg Bertrand of Mississauga says he understands why the city is doing it and doesn't mind.

"A fire, a life at stake, is a pretty big issue," he said. "I believe there is appropriate parking in most places."

Other drivers say it's a good way for the city to make some extra money on the backs of those who are careless and inconsiderate.

Toronto city council approved the new fines back in 2004, but it took a while for the new measures to get provincial approval.
