Freezing rain causes slippery commute on Eastern Ont. roads

Freezing rain glazed roads and sidewalks with ice across eastern Ontario Monday morning, leading to a slippery commute for pedestrians and drivers and leading school boards to cancel their buses through much of the region.
A freezing rain warning remained in effect in Ottawa at 8:30 a.m., though Environment Canada predicted it would give way to rain showers as temperatures approached their high of 4 C.

Schools remained open, but buses were cancelled in areas including:
- Ottawa (Catholic and public, both French and English).
- Lanark, Leeds and Grenville.
- Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.
- Prescott and Russell.
- Renfrew County.
- Northumberland County.
- Kawartha Lakes.
- Simcoe County.
- Peterborough.
- Hastings and Prince Edward counties.
- Lennox and Addington counties.
West Quebec students were beginning their March Break Monday.
Provincial police in eastern Ontario reported 41 collisions between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. on roads and highways east of Brighton and Pembroke. No serious injuries were reported.
The National Capital Commission closed the Rideau Canal skateway until further notice.
