Highway 400 was reopened Tuesday morning and a man was in custody after he allegedly threatened to blow himself up inside his car Monday night.
Police closed the busy highway north of Toronto between Major Mackenzie Drive and Highway 9 for several hours after receiving a 911 call at about 9:20 p.m. from a man who said he wanted to hurt himself, and indicated he had a bomb in his car.
"Needless to say, that got our attention and numerous resources from York Regional Police, the OPP and, in the end, the Toronto Police," said Insp. Gary Miner of the York Regional Police.
Police responded with dogs and called in Toronto's bomb squad. They closed the highway in both directions for six hours, but reopened it to traffic in time for Tuesday morning's rush hour.
The man, whose car was parked on the shoulder on the southbound lanes, was arrested after several hours of negotiations.
Roderick Anderson, 44, of Nottawasaga Township faces several charges, including dangerous weapons charges and dangerous driving.
