Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty will officially accept delivery of the first new GO Train engine on Tuesday afternoon.

The diesel-powered engine is the first of 27 new locomotives that will eventually replace most of the company's aging fleet.

The arrival of the new engines means not only more reliable service on the Lakeshore and Milton runs, but more room for passengers too.

Edmund Shea, spokesman for Go Transit, said it will be able to retire engines that are increasingly breaking down and causing service delays.  Some of the current engines are close to 20 years old.

The new locomotives are also more powerful and that means they can pull longer trains.

Shea says GO will be able to add two additional cars to the 10 car trains that currently run on the Lakeshore and Milton lines, increasing the capacity.
