Rather than lining up at the weeklong Boxing Day sales, hundreds of people in Toronto are volunteering at the Daily Bread food bank.

The food bank says many hands are needed to help sort more than 400,000 kilograms of food Torontonians donated over the Christmas season.

Volunteers sort large pallets of food into smaller boxes for distribution.

Vince Vallanero has been lending a hand each holiday season for 12 years. He started when his high school came out to help and after that he decided to make it a tradition.

"At the end of the day you feel good about yourself, you know. Over the holidays everyone is a little more giving, which is kind of nice. And hopefully you come away with the feeling of, maybe I should do this a little more often, or encourage other people to come," said Vallanero.

This holiday campaign has been a good one for Daily Bread.

The food drive ends next week, and it looks as if the charity will meet its goal of one million pounds (455,000 kg) of food.

"Last year was really good, and this year looks like it's going to equal or top it," said Gail Nyberg, executive director of Daily Bread.

Nyberg said more than 800 volunteers will help sort through the soup, noodles and other non-perishables.

In January the food will be distributed to smaller food banks and meal programs around the GTA.

Nyberg hopes the donated food will last until the spring food drive begins in March.
