Godfrey, who will resign his seat July 1, said it was time for him to go after serving the government 14 years. He will become headmaster at the Toronto French School.

The MP, who represents the Toronto riding of Don Valley West, served as a junior cabinet minister under former prime minister Paul Martin.

First elected in 1993, Godfrey has held a number of senior government positions, including Minister of State (Infrastructure and Communities), Parliamentary Secretary to the prime minister, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Co-operation, and to the Minister of Canadian Heritage.

Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion hailed Godfrey for his years of service to the party and to Canadian public life.

"As Minister of State for Infrastructure and Communities, he was instrumental in leading the Liberal government's efforts to secure the New Deal for Cities and Communities," Dion said in a news release.
