Progressive Conservative MPP Tim Hudak says his party shouldn't give up on trying to financially help families who send their children to private religious schools.

Hudak, who represents Niagara West-Glanbrook, said the faith-based funding policy of leader John Tory was not the best approach.

The policy was declared dead by the party last week in the wake of Tory's failure to win his own Toronto seat and the party's poor showing in the election.

Hudak said the policy wasn't developed at the grassroots level or shown to Conservatives before it appeared in the platform.

Hudak is considered a potential future leadership contender, but doesn't believe Tory should step down for the failed policy direction.

He said Tory's future will come up in February at a party convention in London.
