A large crowd descended on Dundas Square Thursday afternoon for the kickoff of the 2007 United Way campaign.

More than 1,000 people gathered to celebrate the success of the United Way of Greater Toronto's 2006 campaign — it raised a record-breaking $106.8 million — and to find out how much the charity wants to raise this year.

"We've got a dream of the work we want to do," United Way president and CEO Frances Lankin said.

"I believe in Toronto, I believe if we all dream together about the kind of city we want to have and if we all come together we can have that goal. It's going to take all of Toronto to participate so everyone can make a difference. Everyone can be part of the solution."

Lankin announced that in 2007 United Way will be looking to raise another record amount — $108 million — and that she's confident the goal will be reached.

The United Way of Greater Toronto supports 200 health and social service agencies.
