Police have called off the search for a Toronto woman reported missing almost three weeks ago in northwestern Ontario's Rainbow Falls Provincial Park.
Sgt. Deb Tully said Ontario Provincial Police made their decision Thursday morning after finding no evidence of anyone moving through the bush where Christina Calayca, 20, was last seen jogging on Aug. 6.
Police had found clothing and a footprint similar to Calayca's but nothing that could be linked to the missing woman. They also said there was no evidence of foul play.
On Tuesday, police said they were looking for a "non-responsive person" after failing to find any sign that Calayca, a day-care worker, was on the move.
At the same time, they stopped an aerial search of the area, 180 kilometres east of Thunder Bay, and began a slower ground search, in which officers began walking in the park in a grid-like fashion.
In addition, a marine team continued to search park waters. The park is near Schreiber, on the north shore of Lake Superior.
During the 17-day search, rugged terrain and dense bush slowed teams covering an eight-kilometre radius.
"At this time, we're suspending the active search. If more information comes to light, then we'll be following those leads, whether it's by way of an investigation or search," said provincial police Supt. Mike Armstrong.
Police said they are now asking for public's help in solving the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
Calayca is about 5-2 and weighs 125-130 lbs. She is of Asian descent with black shoulder-length hair and brown eyes and was wearing a blue hoodie over a maroon and purple striped shirt, with black pants and running shoes.
