The Toronto Argonauts signed veteran quarterback Rocky Butler to their practice roster on Monday.

Butler, 27, was released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before the season after spending the five previous seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Toronto was in need of a third-string quarterback after learning that starter Michael Bishop would miss up to two months of action with a fractured wrist. Former Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch is also on the injured list for the next several weeks.

Butler has completed 80 of 156 passes for 1,133 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions in his CFL career. The mobile quarterback also rushed 56 times for 319 yards and five touchdowns.

Toronto coach Mike Clemons has not yet officially chosen veteran Damon Allen or Mike McMahon as the starting quarterback for the next game, in Calgary on Saturday (CBC, 7 p.m. ET).

Allen started the team's opening-game loss to B.C., while the former NFL quarterback McMahon has seen action as a backup in the club's last two games.

Argos bolster secondary

Meanwhile, the Argos came to a practice roster agreement Monday with another former Tiger-Cat, safety Wayne Shaw.

Released by Hamilton on July 11, Shaw played in both exhibition games as well as the first two contests of the regular season.

In 16 games last season, the Winnipeg native posted 32 defensive tackles and three quarterback sacks.

Shaw has amassed 260 defensive tackles and 25 interceptions for 494 return yards and six touchdowns in his nine-year CFL career.

Originally drafted 13th overall by Toronto in 1999, Shaw spent three seasons with the Argos from 1999 to 2001 before signing with the Montreal, where he helped the Alouettes reach two consecutive Grey Cup appearances, winning in 2002.
