Emergency crews were working to stop a natural gas leak in an East York neighbourhood Monday morning.

A high-pressure gas line was struck around 7 a.m. ET on Broadview Avenue near Pottery Road, forcing the evacuation of one nearby building as a precaution.

The 111-unit building at 1050 Broadview Ave. was evacuated, according to police.

Four blocks of Broadview Avenue — from Pottery Road north to Bater Avenue — have been closed by police as Enbridge crews work to cap the leak.

Toronto police issued a public safety alert asking people to stay away from the area and use alternate driving routes.

Area residents and businesses have been told to close all windows.
