The Toronto Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates settled for a 2-2, 10-inning tie in Grapefruit League action on Monday.

Ryan Doumit homered off Brian Tallet in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull the Pirates even at 2-2 with the visiting Blue Jays in front of 5,390 fans at Bradenton, Fla.

Toronto starter Josh Towers was terrific, allowing just one unearned run on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Towers needed 28 pitches to retire the side in the first inning, but settled down after that.

"After that, I threw the ball the exact same way and got better results somehow," he said.

"He pitched great," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.

Asked if Towers pitched his way into the starting rotation this spring, Gibbons said: "We'll all know at the end of the week. We don't know how everything is going to line up."

Jeff Duncan's run-scoring single keyed a two-run fifth inning for the Blue Jays (10-11-4).

Duncan, who was assigned to Toronto's minor-league camp afterward, and John McDonald finished with two hits apiece.

Ronny Paulino went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored for the Pirates (10-15-2).

Pittsburgh starter Paul Maholm permitted two runs — both unearned — on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts over six innings.
