An off-duty Durham Region police officer and his friend died in an accident over the weekend while testing the speed of a snowmobile on Lake Scugog northeast of Toronto.
Const. Greg Hearn, 41, and David White, 44, both of Little Britain, were using a radar device to clock the speed of the snowmobile on the frozen lake southwest of Lindsay on Friday night, police said.
White was driving the snowmobile at around 9 p.m. when it crashed into Hearn, who was standing on the ice with a radar gun to measure the snowmobile's speed. Both men died at the scene.
Hearn was a former member of the Toronto and York Region police forces.
City of Kawartha Lakes OPP are investigating the incident.
