Hundreds of workers stranded at a southwestern Ontario nuclear power plant are finally heading home.

Heavy snow along the eastern shore of Lake Huron had caused road closures that trapped 300 Bruce Nuclear Generating Station employees, some since Friday.

The plant began busing workers out of the plant Tuesday afternoon.

Bruce Power, the company that operates the facility, keeps cots and food on site for emergencies such as this, said spokesman Steve Cannon.

"Some people did have a long weekend, but hopefully things will get back to normal soon," said Cannon.

Employees in nearby communities such as Port Elgin and Kincardine, who had been put on standby to relieve their colleagues as soon as roads were cleared, were sent in to replace them.

With snow continuing to fall Tuesday afternoon, Cannon said they were lucky to get the people out when they did.

And more snow is in the forecast for every day this week, according to Environment Canada.
