Twenty-four police officers are facing internal disciplinary charges following claims by two men they videotaped the off-duty officers at a late-night drinking party in a Mississauga, Ont., parking lot.

Two sergeants and 22 constables from Peel Region's 11 Division face a range of Police Services Act charges, including neglect of duty, corrupt practice, deceit and discreditable conduct.

In mid-September, two young men went to the media claiming they had been assaulted by officers after they were caught videotaping an early morning party on Aug. 28.

Despite those allegations of assault, Peel police Sgt. Taufic Saliba said they have decided that no criminal charges will be laid. A police press release states that there is "no reasonable prospect of conviction in criminal court."

A lawyer representing the pair — Richard Cimpoesu, 24, and Orlando Canizalez, 21 — said the two decided to videotape the party to gather proof of the late-night parties they say took place regularly in their neighbourhood.

Cimpoesu says that when partiers spotted the two with their camera, they were chased down by more than a dozen off-duty officers, then allegedly beaten.

A press release states that the charges have "brought discredit to the reputation of the Peel Regional Police" and calls the alleged actions "unacceptable."

The officers are scheduled to appear before a tribunal in Mississauga on Jan. 22, 2007.
