The LCBO is recalling four brands of sherry that tested positive for a potential carcinogen.

The provincial liquor retailer recalled Brights Pale Supreme Sherry on Oct. 26 after routine testing showed the product contained ethyl carbamate, a naturally occurring compound in fermenting products.

Three more sherries, London XXX Sherry, London Supreme Sherry and Brights Canadian Dry Sherry were added to the recall Monday.

While officials stressed the carcinogen does not pose a direct health risk, they cautioned that when sherry is used in baking, heat can boost production of the compound. Dr. George Soleas, the LCBO's vice-president of quality assurance, said the recall was issued as a precautionary measure.

"This is not like E. coli or botulism where you're acutely affected. To be affected by something like this, you would have to consume it for a long time for many years, so there is no risk at all," he said. "It's very, extremely difficult for anyone to get cancer from this type of chemical, unless you're consuming it on [a] daily basis and you're drinking large amounts of it."

The LCBO will exchange the product or issue a refund with proof of purchase.
